My roommate’s family has a cottage on Cayuga Lake, one of the finger lakes here in upstate New York. Mitch and I spent July 4th there with Emily, her family, and her boyfriend, Tim. We had an awesome time and I can’t wait to go back! Wine tasting, kayaking, tubing, boating, eating, drinking, more eating . . . hard life, I know. Here are a couple pictures that I took at sunset. You’ll notice that the second picture is simply an isolated shot of the tree at the right of the first picture. The colors of the sky were stunning. If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you already know that I am infatuated with water and sunsets. Mother Nature may be fickle, but she never ceases to amaze. Today I was back at work on the Sam Patch, a replica of an 1800s packet boat, on the Erie Canal. I did a lot of posting about the boats and my summer gig back when I was doing the 365 Photos project that started this blog. Click on the tags – you’ll see! It was a rather gorgeous day on the canal, too. Another picture of water . . .
I grew up with the Erie Canal practically in my backyard, but it wasn’t until college that I really began to appreciate the natural beauty of upstate New York and everything our waterways have to offer.
This morning when I woke up, the radio told me it was -1º outside. Funnily enough, that’s not the coldest it has been this winter. We had a very mild winter last winter, so I guess we’re due for it. It was bright and sunny today, though, which was exciting. By the time I left work at 4pm it was 24º. Much better. Felt balmy. It’s amazing what can perspective can do.
Anyway, thanks to the sun and the rapid temperature increase over the course of today, the snow on our roof started to melt. Today is garbage day so my ’round the back neighbors filled their recycling bin and left it on the side of the house. I assume they plan to bring it to the bottom of the driveway, but my neighbors also seem to drop the ball when it comes to taking out the garbage. Thanks to the melting snow, this is what happened to their recycling bin:
This is the time of year when teachers begin to think about school. In my case, I’m thinking about how much I have to do before school starts and how I really don’t want to do it. As much as I love teaching, I’m still in summer mode. I’ve been working on the boat a lot this past week, and the signs of summer that we see every day are not helping me work on school.
However, I am looking forward to the start of the school year because I love school! I chose to be there! I can’t wait to meet my new students, new colleagues, try out new ideas, revise old ones, and be a better teacher than I was last year. I’m also taking Italian (just for fun) at our local community college. I don’t know how to not be a student.
Another goal for the school year is to revitalize this blog. I loved doing it and then I stopped, for reasons still unclear to me. I’m going to aim for a post once a week, probably Wednesday because that’s the middle of the work week and it’s all downhill from there. So keep following, please and thank you!
Enjoy the last bit of summer!
