What kind of people do we want to be? What kind of world do we want to live in? Many would say that we want to leave our children with a better world than we have today, and this short book suggests that “better” actually means “more peaceful.” Developing this world first requires us to develop a peaceful mindset and attitude toward how we understand ourselves, the world, and our place in it. This book explores what peace means, how to cultivate a peaceful life, and why peace ought to be part of the framework of modern education.

Having a child is a big decision. This short dialogue is an examination of that decision. It looks at the effects and ethical implications of choosing to have children or not through three levels of evaluation: the child’s, the parents’, and the world’s benefits and costs. It does not find one right answer or even a best option among the many perspectives examined, but rather attempts to make all the variables clearly understood so that a person can make a deliberate choice with all the options in mind.
