Today in Global History

Today in Global History 9 we continued our study of Sparta and Athens. Here’s a cute video that I showed my freshmen. It’s not perfect, it might not even be considered good, but it gets across important aspects of Spartan life and always invites a slew questions.

Click on the screenshot below to watch! It’ll only take 3 minutes of your time and you’ll probably learn a thing or two.

Curriculum Night

Yep. That night. The one where the parents come to school to meet the teachers. As a teacher, I like tonight because I like to meet the people with whom I’ll be corresponding all year. By the same token, I don’t like tonight because I have to go back to school for another two hours and dodge questions like, “Why did you give my child a B and not an A on this assignment?”. But of course, most parents are wonderful and supportive of both students and teachers. It’s just those inevitable few that make curriculum night a challenge.

Before I head out tonight, and as I write this, I’m sitting on the porch enjoying unseasonably warm weather. I took this picture because I loved watching the light on the leaves. I hope you enjoy it, too.

And for the record, I don’t “give” grades. Students earn them.

Picture Day!

Today is picture day at school, which means the girls are “dressed up.” My school has uniforms and “dress up” days are different from “dress down” days in the sense that girls are not allowed to wear jeans. This policy, of course, led to questions about whether colorful pants are considered jeans. And then there are the girls who are wearing sweatpants and claim that these are not jeans and therefore should not be prohibited on “dress up” days.

The moral of the story, however dressed up or down we are, is that we have made it through our first full week of school and that is something to celebrate!
